— In partnership with ENOWA, the energy and water division of NEOM
The Monaco Hydrogen Alliance today announced the launch of the Monaco Prize for Innovation in Renewable Hydrogen and Transportation. The annual Prize, the first of its kind in the world, is designed to accelerate technological innovation in the field of renewable hydrogen and mobility. Solutions will be assessed by a panel of professionals in the fields of renewable hydrogen, transportation and maritime mobility. The inaugural 2022 edition of the Monaco Prize will particularly focus on solutions which can positively impact the maritime mobility value chain.
Hydrogen, particularly renewable hydrogen, can and must play a critically important role in global and national decarbonization strategies — notably throughout the transportation sector, which today accounts for nearly 25% of all global carbon emissions. While shipping today accounts for nearly 3% of global carbon emissions, this is estimated to rise to 5% to 8% of global emissions by 2050. While the global shipping industry was left out of the Paris Accord in 2015, the .International Maritime organization established Maritime Technology Cooperation Centers to improve energy efficiency in the global maritime industry in 2017 and in the COP 26 in Glasgow in 2022 decarbonization of maritime mobility was listed as a global priority.
John Rossant, President of the Monaco Hydrogen Alliance, declared: “We believe innovation happens everywhere. The Monaco Prize for Innovation in Renewable Hydrogen and Mobility will encourage rising talents in the fields of renewable hydrogen and mobility, together with the projects they promote, offering them the support of a solutions-oriented community. We look forward to working closely with entrepreneurs and innovators to help address one of the most pressing challenges of our time – moving sustainably.”
Rewarding innovative solutions
The Monaco Prize for Innovation in Renewable Hydrogen and Transportation provides recognition and access to innovative solutions in the field of mobility. Entrepreneurs and innovative start-ups, solution-focused projects within multinational firms, inventive policy frameworks and solutions from around the globe are encouraged to apply for the Prize.
Who awards the Prize?
The Prize is awarded by the Monaco Hydrogen Alliance with support from NEOM’s ENOWA, the 2022 strategic partner of Monaco Hydrogen Alliance. Initial selection rounds will be led virtually by members of the MHA Task Force ‘Transforming the Maritime Value-Chain with Renewable Hydrogen’, representatives of MHA members as well as the MHA Editorial Committee.
For the final round, interviews will take place in person – unless sanitary or travel conditions prevent the jury to meet selected solutions. Successful candidates will be informed after each round.
When and how the Prize will be awarded?
The Prize will be awarded during the Monaco Hydrogen Forum Gala dinner in November 2022. The 5 finalists will receive an invitation to attend the Monaco Hydrogen Forum. They will be interviewed in person – and if not possible via video conference. The winner will be announced during the Gala Dinner of the Monaco Hydrogen Forum. Special distinctions may be awarded to other solutions.
Projects will be evaluated based on the following considerations:
