Q&A with Monaco Hydrogen Alliance and Rebecca Sharp, CEO and Co-founder, Genevos
How is Genevos contributing to the decarbonization of the maritime sector and the preservation of marine ecosystems?
Genevos plays a key role in making hydrogen power accessible to the maritime sector by providing a plug-and-play zero emissions solution including full balance of plant. Specialising in fuel cell integration with low temperature Proton Exchange Membrane (PEM) stack technology the Hydrogen Power Module (‘HPM’) product range includes 40 kW, 80 kW, and 250 kW units designed to connect in parallel to achieve high and customized power demands on board a diverse range of vessels.
Today, the maritime standards for gas compression of between 250 and 350 bar results in large H2 tanks, which are demanding on volume. Immediately suitable applications include coastal and short-sea vessels that return to shore for refuelling every few days such as small-scale fishing vessels, workboats and services vessels, ferries and water taxis.
The maritime sector is estimated to contribute around 3% GHGs globally per year, with a significant health impact on life above and below water. Genevos is contributing to the decarbonization of vessels through key projects including a recently awarded Horizons Europe fishing vessel demonstrator, ‘H2-SEAS’, which will report on the European regulatory aspects on the decarbonization of small-scale fishing vessels, leisure vessels, and in addition to other currently confidential projects featuring workboats and service vessel detailed studies.
Hydrogen fuel cells operate via a chemical process to convert hydrogen into electricity, producing no emissions except water vapor and warm air. This non-mechanical process results in zero vibration and low operational sound pollution – a solution for safeguarding marine life, currently at risk due to loud vibrating engines and motors which disrupts vital communication and behavior patterns among marine species, jeopardizing entire ecosystems.
Whereas engines burn hydrogen, producing power through combustion, like conventional engines creating high levels of nitrogen oxides (NOx). These are linked to smog, acid rain, and damaging health impacts such as asthma and respiratory infections.
Green hydrogen has 0% GHG emissions and can therefore contribute to a rapid decrease of the average GHG emissions for shipping. The maritime industry faces increasingly stricter air emissions and climate legislation, whereby hydrogen that is produced with renewable energy (green hydrogen) has been identified as a fuel that could offer a ‘near-zero’ carbon solution on a well-to-wake basis.
What are the latest features of the newly launched gen II marine fuel cells?
Since the successful deployment of several prototype HPMs aboard leisure craft across Europe, Genevos has launched the Gen II range, selecting today’s most cutting-edge and proven technology with high efficiencies to be taken through to Type Approval Certification (TAC), a required stamp for commercial operators.
Making available certified power systems ensures installation is made safer and simpler for OEMS and integrators.
What do you think the industry needs to really take off?
Collaboration and less bureaucracy.
Collaboration across the value chain in this new industry and applied markets is particularly crucial to ensure the puzzle is complete with stakeholders aligning demand and supply.
For many years now controlling climate change has been throttled by political barriers and bureaucracy. I believe that governments need to ‘step-up and speed-up’ the enforcement of stricter regulations and support companies/industries with grants and low interest loans to accelerate innovation and deployment. In turn these countries will have their rewards as they become leaders able to export knowledge and fuel at mass with low cost.
Though hydrogen has been safely used in industry for decades, it requires new demonstrations across industries and sectors to learn and optimise its use. First-mover projects are a crucial element in this deployment along with associations and alliances to support the supply chain development and recognise key actors.
The industry relies on turning words into action, not tomorrow, but today.
